Giraffe Manor—A 1930s Era Historic Manor House in Nairobi
This dreamy hotel is on my bucketlist and I had planned to visit there before COVID-19 hit, so I decided to introduce you to it anyway and I’ll update this with my in-person experience when I—hopefully—get there next year.
A boutique hotel straight from the storybooks, Giraffe Manor has been hailed the “most instagrammed property in the world.” A herd of Rothschild Giraffes make their home at the manor and often poke their necks through the windows for a “visit” during breakfast.
With brickwork covered in thick, creeping greens, the hotel facade has a stately appearance that oozes vintage grandeur. Lovely courtyard gardens dot the grounds, alluring guests for an afternoon chat or a bit of quiet reading.
The manor house began as a hunting lodge in the 1930s and in the 1970s championed the conservation efforts for endangered Rothschild Giraffes. Today, it’s a boutique hotel that welcomes visitors from across the globe.
Giraffe Manor features both manor house rooms and garden manor rooms. The garden manor was built in 2011 as a replica of the original manor house and was constructed using reclaimed wood from the same era.
Rooms
Every room features a different design and aesthetic each beautiful and charming in its own right. From four-post king to quaint twin beds to lush sitting chairs and vintage side tables, you step back in time but not in comfort and class.
One of the BEST things about the rooms is that each one tells the story of a different giraffe, historic person, or person of importance to the manor. You truly feel like you learn a piece of history you’ll never forget.
Some rooms feature in-room fireplaces, and many have balconies to take in the views and feed the giraffes from. Amenities include free wifi, an in-room safe, handmade Kenyan toiletries, dressing gowns, mosquito nets, laundry service, a coffee/tea machine, and (of course!) a hair dryer (praise the Lord!).
Your Stay, Experiences, and Dining Options
You can fill your stay at Giraffe Manor full of wonderful, bucket-list experiences. From private safaris to cultural photographic safaris to gorilla safaris to fossil hunting to gorge excursions to horseback riding on the beach to wildlife migration experiences to pink flamingo scouting to helicopter tours to elephant and lion adventures and more, you can truly partake in a complete experience around the area.
To keep an intimate atmosphere for staying guests and adhere to maximum capacity guidelines, the manor offers a dining experience for guests only with some exceptions during the low season. They serve a set menu with breakfast, lunch, and dinner services for guests. Due to the small capacity and boutique-like experience, dining at the manor is much like dining at a family home.
