Nyungwe House

Travel

Luxury Rainforest Resort

Nyungwe House is a MAJOR bucket-list place to stay. I visited this resort to meet my friend for lunch while en route to Kenya. She was staying here and I vividly remember how I felt when I saw how absolutely beautiful this place was. It’s the kind of place that stirs the soul and sparks the imagination.

I had the privilege of being given a tour and in that moment I spoke out loud—as if to call it forth—“I will be back and next time I’ll enjoy more than the delicious lunch and tour!”

Nestled in the heart of the African jungle, Nyungwe House is set in the midst of majestic mountain landscapes, their own working tea plantation, and surrounded by wildlife. It’s on the edge of Nyungwe National park approximately 230 km from Kigali International Airport and you can get there by road, domestic flight, or helicopter.

If I imagined the most idyllic, secluded resort in the middle of the jungle where I could read a book, journal, get inspired, and soak up the setting, this would be it. With both adventure activities and a spa, it’s a dream getaway.

Rooms

Nyungwe House consists of wooden villas scattered throughout the resort. From private balconies that graze the trees, giving you your own tree-house views and vibes to stunning interiors with lush and sustainable trimmings, I can’t imagine a more magical jungle experience.

The rooms range from private suites to rooms with a king or two twin beds and are fully furnished, including a TV with satellite or cable. The mix of seating spaces and relaxation nooks provide the perfect getaway whether you’re planning a private business mastermind, looking for a unique place to write your book, or adventuring with your spouse or family.

The en suite bathrooms feature a double vanity, deep stand-alone bath for soaking, and a walk-in shower that faces the forest where you’re sure to catch a glimpse of monkeys swinging between trees.

The rooms emphasize the resort’s pursuit of sustainability by featuring African craftsmanship, natural fibers, and sustainably sourced wood. The ambiance and aesthetic is something out of a dream.

Your Stay, Experiences, and Dining Options

Every stay at the Nyungwe house includes dining, select beverages, and two daily resort experiences of choice from a vast experience list that ranges from spa treatments to jungle walks to tea plantation tours to cooking classes with kids, wellness activities, and more.

You can do everything from bird watching to primate tracking to stargazing to enjoying a canopy walk beneath the trees. The options and activities are endless and the fact that two daily experiences are included in your stay is remarkable.

The jungle spa highlights a number of treatments from facials to holistic therapies to massages and nail treatments. The spa uses organic skincare from luxury South African brand Africology. They also offer healing rituals such as the Fire Ritual to turn pain into healing energy, coffee and mint detoxes, essential oil massages, and more. One really unique experience is the African Potato Experience which is a body wrap formulated with marula oil and potatoes. Per their website and as I’ve read in many natural healing and science articles, potatoes are incredibly anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting. In fact, the African potato is called “Africa’s own miracle fruit.” The spa was truly created to cultivate a place for immersive healing and wellness.

With a number of restaurant and lounge options available, garden-to-table dishes featuring fresh local ingredients are at the heart of every meal overseen by an Executive Chef. Take in the jungle views as you sip tea and savor mouth-watering baked goods in the tea lounge or allow them to a private picnic basket near the tea plantation, lunch by the pool, or a romantic dinner.

The restaurant dining room overlooks the tea plantation and features a menu inspired by diverse African dishes. From three-course lunches to four-course dinners to packed picnic lunches, there are many dining options for a delightful experience.
