Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort—A 5-Star Luxury Resort in Mozambique

Travel

There are island paradises and then there are islands that are so rare, so remarkable that to call them paradise doesn’t do them justice. They invoke awe and majesty, emotion and wonder. Bazaruto Island is one of those islands.

It’s one of six islands off of the coast of Mozambique[1]  that make up the Bazaruto Archipelago—a protected marine reserve and national park. With rolling sand dunes, clear blue ocean views, and a coral reef that spans for 2 miles offshore, it’s a dream escape for explorers and wildlife lovers.

And on this majestic island—where you can spot the rare dugong sea cow and witness the annual humpback whale migration—is the Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort. A 5-star resort with 44 luxury villas that dot the coastline, it includes every amenity imaginable, including an award-winning spa.

If you’re planning a trip to the island (which you absolutely should) this offers the stay of all stays.

The Villas

With 44 villas to choose from, you have your pick of beachside, ocean view, and pool view accommodations. Open a set of floor-to-ceiling glass doors to stroll on the beach or swim in your very own private plunge pool while overlooking the ocean. Whether you want direct beach access, a separative living room or private pool, you can select a villa to suit your preferences.

Each room boasts luxe linens, Mozambique flair, and wifi access. You also have the option of both a dreamy outdoor shower and deep indoor bath in select villas. You’ll find an in-room mini bar and, if staying in for dinner suits you, the restaurant also offers in-villa dining.

Discovery Packages

The resort often offers discovery packages at excellent prices that vary from time to time in inclusions but have been known to feature:

  • villa accommodation
  • gourmet dining for breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • all-inclusive transfers
  • a dhow sunset cruise, and more.

Spa and Wellness

From couples rituals to hydrotherapy to an ice plunge pool to traditional massages with compresses and oils, the spa is the epitome of wellness and relaxation. The spa overlooks the ocean in the most tranquil of atmospheres. Their health bar serves infused waters, herbal teas, juice, and smoothies so if health and relaxation are what you’re after, you’ll find it here, too!

The resort offers yoga, meditation, and for those really wanting to engage in wellness: a wellness day. You’ll wake up in your villa to a smoothie, meet your yoga instructor for morning yoga, enjoy a healthy breakfast, unwind with a 75 minute treatment at the spa, follow the chef through healing therapies and detox treatments, and more.

The resort also boasts a fitness center with weights, cardio equipment, and a fitness circuit.

Dining

The Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort offers a number of dining options. The Golfinho Restaurant and Bar with its breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffets boasts flavors from around the world.  The restaurant overlooks the bay and has a charming ambiance with covered, open-air dining.

Clube Naval offers poolside bites and refreshments. It’s perched over the ocean and offers casual dining so it’s perfect for an afternoon cocktail or lunchtime pizza. They also fire up the grill for a number of seafood and meat dishes. From salads to Himalayan salt brick cooking, it’s a fun dining experience in a fun atmosphere.

Tartaruga restaurant offers beautiful oceanfront dining. The wooden deck is inviting in the afternoon with its unencumbered views of the ocean and in the evening with its overhead glowing light strands and open views of the starry night sky.

The Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort also offers a signature private dining experience called “dining by design.” It comes with a private chef and romantic setup on a secluded sandbank on the beach. Imagine a private chef serving you dinner on your own beautifully set tablescape on the sandy shores of a secluded spot on the island.  Doesn’t it sound amazing?

They also offer in-villa dining and, if you’re a foodie at heart who loves to play in the kitchen, their Spice Spoons cooking class is a must! The Spice Spoons cooking class offers a tour of the resort vegetable garden and orchard. In the show kitchen, Chef will walk you through traditional preparation methods for your dish and you’ll enjoy it over a glass of wine.

At all the restaurants, you’ll find locally sourced seafood and fresh herbs and spices directly from their resort garden pulled together to create curries, grilled delights, and more.

Leisure and Excursion Activities

There’s no shortage of leisure and excursion activities on the island. From on-resort tennis courts and pools to traditional dhow boat sailing, deep sea fishing, coral reef diving, horseback safaris, sand dune wildlife outings and more.

There is so much to explore in this marine national park so an ocean safari is a must for your list. You’ll want to see the dugong sea cow which is vulnerable to extinction because this is one of the only places with such a large population of them. There’s also over 2,000 species of fish and a variety of sea turtles that frequent the coral reef.

I cover all of my favorite excursion activities on Bazaruto Island in my Mozambique country guide. From the craft markets to the ocean safaris, I invite you to check it all out by clicking here

I hope you’ve enjoyed learning more about the resort. It’s truly remarkable.
